It Is Hopeful to Decode the Chicken Genome by the End of This Year So As to Lay a Solid Foundation for the Breeding of Quality Chicken Breeds
On Dec. 1, 2003, the reporter learnt from the Beijing Institute of Genome Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences that this institute will cooperate with the UK, in unfolding sequencing and analysis of Chicken Genome, establishing molecular labeling map of quality Chicken breeds, looking for relevant molecular label of excellent quality performance so as to lay a solid foundation of breeding high-yield quality chicken breeds.
According to what he had learnt, China is the originated place of chicken, preserves large quantities of germplasm resources, therefore the multiple morphological research on chicken genome has important significance in developing excellent quality chicken breeds in China. The discovery of morphological loci of chicken genome by the Beijing Institute of Genome Research can be directly applied in the research on chicken genetic breeding. Thus, it can increase the overall research level of domestic animals in China while play a direct role in the improvement of chicken production performance.
The research project is cooperated between China and the UK. The project is directly implemented by China. This plan will start April 2003. It was estimated that the whole sequencing work would be completed by the end of 2003. Thus, it makes chicken the first domestic animal that has been completely genome sequenced.
