China will develop investigation on the heredity resources of livestock and poultry

In order to find out the latest condition of Chinese livestock and poultry quantities, distribution, feature and development, China will develop a new round of investigation on the heredity resources of livestock and poultry in 2005.
China is one of the countries in the world whose livestock and poultries' heredity resources are richest, not only species and varieties are complete, but also germplasm character differs. There are mainly 20 species of heredity resources of livestock and poultry in China such as pig, chicken, duck and goose, adding up to 576 kinds, in which local is 426, covering 74% of the whole kinds resources; there are 73 breed, covering 12.7% of the whole species resources; and there are 77 imported kinds, covering 13.3% of the whole species resources.
But in recent 20 years, influenced by strong impact of foreign high-yield kinds, varieties and quantities of Chinese livestock and poultry is gradually decreasing and disappearing, it is estimated that at least 30% of livestock and poultries' heredity resources are in peril of extinction.
