Pig Liver to Consist Artificial Liver, 12 Persons Saved
According to Xinhua News Agency on Feb. 27 from Nanjing, the Liver and Gall Bladder Surgery of the Nanjing Gulou Hospital has cooperated with the College of Life Science, Nanjing University in attacking key problems in science and technology. They have used multiple independent innovation technologies to successfully apply biological artificial liver consisted of pig liver cell in clinics. Now, 12 liver-exhausted patients have recovered and got satisfied effect after treatment.
At the research achievement appraisal meeting held recently, Prof. Qiu Fazu, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other experts in this domain hold the view that this research achievement has opened a new path for treatment of serious hepatitis patients.
Biological artificial liver is to extract animal liver cell, after scientific culture and multiplication put them in bioreactor to make them dissolve in human blood so as to replace liver functions. In September 2002, biological artificial liver started to apply in clinics, up to now; this technology has treated 12 serious hepatitis patients, with a recovered rate of 80%.
