Pig That Can Extract Human Albumin Born in Wuhan, Hubei Province
According to report, in September 2003, a group of piglets were farrowed
in the Livestock Farm of the Hubei Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
They appeared very similar to common piglet, but the blood of these
piglets contained human albumin according to the introduction given
by Associate Professor Zheng Xinmin from the Hubei Academy of Agricultural
Sciences. This is the transgenic albumin pig developed successfully
by them. They use the synthesized gene from albumin transfer to pigs,
the pig blood can contain human albumin.
Albumin is an important drug product. At present, albumin is completely
extracted from human blood and the price is very expensive with a
price of about 25~40 RMB per gram. It is much more inexpensive in
price to extract albumin from transgenic pig instead of extracting
it from human blood. One-liter pig blood can extract 50 grams of albumin.
In the future, we can raise pig to earn money from pig blood. According
to estimate theoretically, the profit of such pig industry will increase
150 times profit as compared with that in traditional pig industry.
According to forecasting by Associate Professor Zheng Xinmin, this
kind of pig will be extended in recent years.
