Prospect of Swine Production in China

In the coming ten years (2000-2010) or even longer time, the idea of developing swine production
in China should be as follows: In order to develop swine production stably and continuously in
China. It is necessary to use the international experience for reference, which must be combined
with actual condition of China, to give full play to resource superiority of China, to be market,
oriented to meet the demands, to strengthen basic construction of swine production and to rely on
scientific and technological progress.

Developing goal of swine production in near future According to the demands of nmional
economic development and improvement of people's living standard, taking account of increasing
population, decreasing mold and limitation of crop increasing, we should emphasize on
improving marketing rate of fattened stock and level of swine production based on a slight
increasing of survivor. Now the population in China is 1.232 billion, assuming the increasing rate
is 1% per year, the population will be 1.404 billion in 2010. At that time, 63.882 million tons
pork is needed to reach the level of medium developed countries; in which meat consumption is
70kg including 45.5kg pork per capita. Assuming the weight of carcass is 82kg, 779 million pigs
should be slaughtered. If the number of survivor increase to 487 million (increasing rate is 7-8%
per year), marketing rate of fattened stock should be 160%, I think the goal could be attained.
