Developing course of swine production in China

After China's foundation, especially the practice of reforming and opening in 1978, swine
production in China developed fast, it experienced three phases.

The first phase (from 1949 to 1978): Fashion of feeding was mostly in dispersing type. Swine production was only sideline, one for fertilizer and the other for farmer's meat food. Feeds majored in fodder grass and bran. Commercial pigs were fat and dual-purpose. Production level was low.
The second phase (from I978 to the end of 1980's): Swine production was in the transition of
transforming from sideline to industrialization when the traditional swine production was still
dominant, but large scale swine production developed considerately. By storming strategic pass of
science and technology, many achievements in scientific research were applied to swine
production quickly. In order to meet the demands of lean meat of man, et, some efficient
combinations were selected out by tackling key projects of lean meat pig in "Sixth Five Year Plan",such as Duroc x HuBei white, Duroc x Zhejiang white, Duroc x Sanjiang white, Duroc x
Landrace ~ Beijing Black, Landrac~x Large white x TaiHu. They all had higher production
performance and large quantity of lean meat type pigs came into market, which urged the lean
type swine production developing violently ten. Two-way cross was transformed into three-way
cross for commercial pig production. During the period, complete feed was taken in large-scale
piggeries. Farmer made use of condensed feed and additive in high spirit. It made the swine
production in China reach higher standard.

The third phase (from 1990 to 1998): Large scale swine production has developed rapidly and it
has been a prop industry in China. Swine breeding, scientific research and breed improvement has
great progress. By cooperative tackling key projects, 7 special female lines and 4 male special
lines were fosterod, which production performance almost approached to the international
superior level. Feed industry developed quickly and there were more than 12600 enterprises of
feed mills throughout country, in 1996, 51 million tons of compound-feed was produced. At the
same time, by tackling key projects in "Ninth Five Year Plan", industrialization of swine
production ~was pushed forward.

Undergoing the three phases, swine production has had a great development (Table 1) and
production level of commercial pig has had a great improvement (Table 2). Total pork production
and per capita pork consumption increased continuously (Figure 1).
