Shanghai Succeeds in Pig Embryo
Storage in Ultra-low Temperature
This April, technicians at the Livestock Institution of the Shanghai
Academy of Agricultural Sciences conducted the transplantation of
the embryo of small-sized Bama pigs of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous
Region by using a proper formula of refrigerants. One of the sows
became pregnant and gave birth to ten piggies, 8 of which are alive
and growing well. Presently, technicians are keeping a close watch
of the upgrowth of these piggies.
The success of this experiment marks the first case of pig embryo
storage in ultra-low temperature (-196¡æ) in China, laying a technical
foundation for an effective storage of fine local pig varieties
and the establishment of a special pig embryo bank. In the future,
effort will be made to improve each of the links of the experiment
and raise the conception rate so that this technology can be used
in production
