China¡¯s First Animal Virus Gene Engineering Vaccine Came Out --- Swine Pseudo-rabies Has the Hope to Be Controlled

The swine pseudo-rabies (gene lacking) live vaccine (SA215 strain) developed by Professor Guo Wanzhu from the Sichuan Agricultural University has recently received certificate of state new veterinary medicine, becoming the first animal virus gene engineering vaccine.

Pseudo-rabies is an acute infectious disease of pigs, cattle, sheep and other livestock as well as poultry and wildlife caused by pseudo-rabies virus. Pigs are the main host and infection source of this disease. At present, swine pseudo-rabies has a distribution throughout the world, its epidemics now has a trend of increasing, causing enormous economic losses in animal production. Many countries in the world have listed this disease into the list of key prevention swine diseases.

Through over 10 years of concentrated research, Professor Guo Wanzhu et al. had taken the lead in study on the biological and molecular biological character of pseudo-rabies virus, adopted lacking, recombination and clone as well as other gene operational techniques and successfully constitute a series of pseudo-rabies gene lacking vaccine. Vaccine SA215 strain is one of the symbolic achievements. The result gained by experimental research and application in a big way showed that this vaccine has its unique advantages of better genetic stability, better safety, stronger immunity and better anti-latent infection capacities as compared with routine vaccines and vaccines of the same category, and has reached the application standard of vaccines of the same category.
