Domestic Chicken Meat Price Declined in the First Half of 2003 and Increase Afterwards --- Price of Chicken Meat at the Domestic Country Fair

After the appearance of recovery rise of live chicken price at the domestic country fairs in the latter half of 2002, influenced by the SARS epidemic situation during the period from January to May, the price of live chicken had continuously declined from the price of 8.5 RMB per kg at the beginning of 2003 to 8.42 RMB in May. The live chicken price started to rise by a small margin in June. Along with the end of SARS epidemics, people¡¯s consumption of chicken meat had increased, and chicken price had a significant extent of growth from the 8.43 RMB per kg in June to 9.5 RMB per kg in September, an increase of 12.6%. Since October, due to a stable chicken population in hand, chicken price had declined and chicken price continued to rise in November, the price of live chicken had increased from 8.43 RMB per kg to 9.65 RMB per kg, which was still higher than the price level at the beginning of 2003. The price of live chicken at the country fairs was on average 8.8 RMB per kg, an increase of 1.8% as compared with that during the same period of the previous year.

The trend of the prices of chicken carcass and chicken thigh is similar to that of live chicken price. The price of chicken carcass and chicken thigh reached the top of the year in September, reaching 10 RMB per kg and 10.9 per kg, respectively, an increase of 21.9% and 11.6% as compared with those during the same period of the previous year. In view of the producing areas, the price of live chicken at the Shandong country fairs had increased from 6.92 RMB per kg at the beginning of the year to 8.5 RMB per kg in November, an increase of 22.8%. The price live chicken in Guangdong Province had increased from 13.4 RMB per kg at the beginning of the year to 15.3 RMB per kg in November, an increase of 70%.

In view of the marketing areas, in the third quarter, the live chicken price in Guangdong, Fujian and Shanghai had a rapid increase. In Beijing and Shanghai, the live chicken price market price were 8.13 RMB per kg and 13 RMB per kg, respectively, an increase of different extent as compared with those in June. The live chicken price in Guangdong Province in November was 14.9 RMB per kg, an increase of 70%.
