Fine breed and matched technology
The application of livestock and poultry improved fine breeds to
assemble matched scientific feeding technology has gained good results
in increasing output, improving quality and increasing benefits.
In 2002, the total meat output in China was 65.87 million tons,
the total egg output was 24.62 million tons and the total dairy
product output was 14.004 million tons, an increase of 4.0%, 5.4%
and 24.7%, respectively, as compared with those in the previous
year. China has 13.30 million yaks in China at present, accounting
for about 92% of the total number of yaks in the world. The extension
of yak breed improvement technology, mainly through crossing wild
yaks with domesticated ones, has improved the productive performance
of yak, speeded up the turnover of yak herds, rationally utilized
grassland, protected grassland environment and promoted the increase
of herdsmen¡¯s income in western ethnic minority areas. The technology
for wild yak hybrid improvement alone has increased an output value
of 15.1551 million yuan (RMB) and gained significant benefits, with
an economic benefit of 11.0628 million yuan and an annual economic
benefit of 10.9213 million yuan. The Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region
had established a nucleus herd with 800 breeders through dairy cattle
embryo transfer and experimentally produced 100 000 doses of frozen
semen reaching the standard released by the MOA. By the end of 2002,
the Region had transferred 6000 dairy embryos with high-yielding
diary production, formulated ¡°Procedures for Dairy Model Feeding
Technology¡±, and achieved significant economic and social benefits.
