LIVESTOCK PRODUCT MARKET AND CONSUMPTION

We may get an impression that China¡¯s livestock product market has switched to buyer¡¯s from seller¡¯s if we look at roughly but the fact is that it¡¯s only a relative temporary saturation because there are still a great potential for rural residents since their consumption are still in a very low level

FUTURE DEVELOPMENT PERSPECTIVE

-- General Production
According to China¡¯s food and nutrition development schema (2001-2010), yearly main food intake per capita for securing a reasonable food consumption should be grain ration 155kgs, legume 13kgs, vegetables 147kgs, fruits 38kgs, edible oil 10kgs, sugar 9kgs, meat 28kgs, eggs 15kgs, dairy products 16kgs, aquatic products 16kgs. As a matter of fact, China¡¯s meat and poultry egg production per capita has surpassed 28kgs in 1992 and 15kgs in 1996 respectively.

Concerning the increase of market demand along with overall rising of income, livestock products still have a great potential to develop.

At present, daily protein accommodation of the world¡¯s average per capita is approx. 70g, of which some 25g goes to animal protein. Average protein supply and animal protein in developed nations are 100g and 60g respectively. The overall protein supply of China¡¯s urban and rural residents just fairly reached the world¡¯s average, nonetheless, animal protein is just around 20g that still lag behind the world¡¯s average. Resident¡¯s living standard will be further improved along with the increasing of the general income and therefore the demand for animal product will keep going up.

Livestock product consumption varies greatly between township residents and those in rural areas and that makes a big potential for livestock products in rural areas. Rural resident¡¯s average family livestock product consumption (meat and poultry eggs) in the year 2000 was 22.45kgs and only accounts for 61.15% of those urban citizens which their average family consumption is 36.71kgs. Livestock product consumption of the rural residents will steadily go upward along with the rural economic development and sustainable growth of farmer¡¯s income. Rural residents that account for 70% of China¡¯s population will become the primary part of livestock product consumption increase in the near future.
